Learn to Lead Canyons

Gain the roped rescue skills you need to safely lead a group of keen canyoners

Over three days you will learn the essentials of leading and rescuing others in Blue Mountains canyons.  Building on the fundamentals covered in Learn to Canyon, you will learn to lead a canyon including set up and manage a top belay and use hauling systems to rescue a person below.  You will develop the group management skills to ensure the safety of your group. You will practice a range of rescues, including efficiently leaving the belay to assist.

This course gives you the skills and knowledge you need to:

  • Lead a group through a canyon
  • Plan a belay to facilitate rescue
  • Belay and lower a canyoner from above
  • Apply principles of mechanical advantage to rescue scenarios
  • Make wise decisions in a canyon environment
  • Efficiently respond to a non-routine situation in a multi-pitch environment

What you need:

  • Transport to the Canyon. Locations vary, but most courses are run within a 20 minute drive from Blackheath, Blue Mountains although sometimes we may go to canyons further afield. Transport options are available on request
  • Lunch (unless specifically listed)

* We encourage you to bring your own canyoning wetsuit, harness and any other canyoing equipment you have.  If you don’t have anything, no worries, we can fit you out from scratch.
