Foundations of Traditional Climbing

Want to get away from the queues and chaos of sport climbing?  This course gives you the lowdown on the art of single pitch traditional climbing (using removable gear like cams and wires), from gear selection and placement to belaying, anchor set-up and advanced safety tips.

Pre-requisites

  • Indoor to Outdoor Conversion (Introduction to Single Pitch Sport Lead Climbing)
  • Self Rescue Level 1
  • Self Rescue Level 2
  • Evidence of equivalent training or submission of a climbing log book
  • Your instructor will call you before the course to ask you about your experience, interests, abilities and aspirations and make sure that this course is the right one for you.

This course will enable you to:

  •   Access, lead and belay traditional climbs
  •   Confidently place, assess and remove trad gear
  •   Assess and utilise natural features like threads, bollards and chocks
  •   Build multi-point anchors using natural and removable gear, ropes, slings and cordelettes
  •   Recognise specific trad climbing hazards and address them
Course Outline

What’s provided:

  • Free download of full course notes
  • Printout of key concepts for note-taking during the course
  • Pre-course chat with your instructor
  • All personal climbing equipment*
  • Climbing hardware (ropes, draws, cams, wires, hexes and lots more)
  • Course completion certificate (by request)

If required:

  • Rain jacket
  • Thermals and fleeces

What you need:

  • Transport to the crag. Locations vary, but most courses are within a 20 minute drive from Blackheath, Blue Mountains. Transport options are available on request
  • Lunch (unless specifically listed)

* We encourage you to bring your own climbing shoes, harness and any other climbing equipment you have.  If you don’t have anything, no worries, we can fit you out from scratch.
