One of the most remote and adventurous climbing locations in the Blue Mountains region, the Wolgan Valley is at once enigmatic and alluring. Once a thriving mining outpost, today it is a rugged wilderness offering adventure climbing which is among the best in Australia.
It is about 1 1/2 hours drive from Blackheath to the tiny abandoned shale-mining settlement of Newnes and the end of the road. From here, a world of soaring sandstone cracks and corners reveals itself.
Approaches are steep and often long, many of them littered with ruins from the region’s mining past. Routes here are old school adventurous, mainly multi-pitch and almost exclusively traditional.
