Your Day’s Journey
We’ll start at our Blackheath office to prepare your gear, including wetsuits, and brief you on the day ahead. A scenic drive to Leura and along the Mt Hay Range takes us to the canyon’s entry point, where a short hike descending into rugged terrain hints at the true adventure to come.
Descending into Butterbox Canyon
The journey begins with roped downclimbs and scrambles leading to the first abseil. As we progress downstream, you’ll navigate several abseils before reaching the heart of the canyon: the remarkable slot and the infamous chockstone abseils.
The Chockstone Abseils
This section of Butterbox is the highlight of the day. First, you’ll abseil 25 metres onto a massive free-hanging chockstone wedged high between the canyon walls. From this dramatic perch, your only way down is a thrilling free-hanging abseil into the cascading waterfall below. Deep within the canyon’s towering walls, this moment will stay with you forever.
Lunch with Altitude
From the slot, the canyon opens up to reveal the true depths that we have descended. We’ll traverse down the creek with more abseils, water jumps and roped traversing along the sides of the canyon before we arrive at our serene lunch spot. What’s on offer? Whatever YOU have selected from the Altitude Deli’s generous menu! They can handle all dietary requirements and are well known for providing the best lunches to fuel big adventures in the Blue Mountains.
Exiting the Canyon
The ascent involves a combination of hiking, scrambling, and exposed traverses using via ferrata-style ropes. Your guide will expertly manage every technical aspect, allowing you to focus on the views and embrace the adventure. The grand finale is a rock climb to a ledge above, followed by a roped traverse and a scramble to easier terrain. This challenging and exposed section is what makes Butterbox Canyon such a committing yet rewarding experience.
A Full Day of Thrills
This demanding trip typically takes around 12 hours, though experienced and fit groups may finish earlier. The technical nature of Butterbox Canyon ensures an unforgettable day filled with many obstacles, incredible views, and a profound sense of achievement.
