NOEC Conference 2022 Activity Day Details – BMAC

Empress Falls Canyon

8am to 1pm (5 hours)

A fantastic abseiling canyon for those with a good level of fitness and previous abseiling experience.

Empress Falls Canyon is the most popular canyon in the Blue Mountains, in part due to the ease of access and its short duration, however primarily due to the inclusion of all the classic canyoning elements of scrambling, wading, swimming, and jumping, culminating in a thrilling climax of a 30 metre abseil straight down Empress Falls.

Empress Falls Canyon is in The Valley of the Waters which is situated only a short walk (2km) from the Fairmont Resort, so we will be walking from the Resort to the canyon entry point. The return walk is an equivalent distance.

The day will commence with wetsuit sizing and gear allocation at the Resort. We will be onsite at the Resort from 7.30am with ample wetsuit sizes for you to try on prior to our departure. All harnesses with descenders, helmets, canyon packs and dry bags are provided. Synthetic thermals, fleeces and beanies can also be borrowed for the day should you wish to use our warm supplementary layers and not pack your own.

A pre-canyon group briefing will take place at 8am before we depart on the walk-in no later than 8.30am.

Your return to the Resort will be approximately 1pm after we’ve enjoyed a delicious deli-prepared lunch.

Places are limited to 10 participants (with 2 guides).

Butterbox Canyon

7am to 5pm (10 hours)

Butterbox is a spectacular canyon with superb rock architecture. It is a challenging, long adventurous day that is physically demanding. All participants must have a high level of fitness and previous abseiling and climbing experience.

This great action-packed adventure offers lots of variety with numerous abseils and water jumps (water level dependant)! One of the highlights is the two 25-metre challenging abseils straight down a deep dark slot. The second abseil is off a giant chockstone wedged between the canyon walls. After finishing the canyon, it is not over yet, as there is a 15-metre, grade-12 roped climb to conquer on the way out. This short climb is approximately 100-metres above the tree canopy below so being comfortable with the exposure is a must. It is a great finale to an awesome day! The steep exit walk (including the climb) can take up to 2-3 hours.
